A former council chief died after falling over in his kitchen an inquest heard this week.

William ‘Bill’ Hamilton, 62, who lived in Bedford served as a senior executive with the former Bedfordshire County Council.

On October 5 Mr Hamilton had a meal with his wife at their home. She left the kitchen for a short time, but heard a loud thud and rushed back into the kitchen to find her husband on the floor bleeding from his ear.

The couple attended Bedford Hospital where Mr Hamilton, who had played squash the night before the accident, received a CT scan which showed a large subdural haematoma, he died at the hospital in the early hours of October 6.

On delivering a verdict of accidental death, Deputy Coroner Martin Oldham said: “Bill Hamilton served the residents of Bedfordshire for many years, with distinction and industry, as a senior executive with the now defunct Bedfordshire County Council.

“The evidence before me indicates that he was a man of considerable intelligence who applied his talents to his work, to his roles as a governor of a school in Bedford, and to his family, community and social life.

“He was an engaging man with a wide circle of professional, social and family contacts who were attracted to his gentle and witty ways. His sense of humour was renown.”

He added: “It is sad that on the night of October 5 2012 while at home, he fell in the kitchen and hit his head on the floor causing a bleed to the brain that was not survivable.

“He died in the early hours of the Sunday at Bedford Hospital.

“The court offers sincere condolences to his wife, daughters and extended family and his many friends who will feel his loss profoundly.”
