A singalong at 100
MBTC-14-08-12- 100th Birthday John Scanlon . Bedford.
A CENTENARIAN and former foundry working is celebrating his landmark birthday, with a rousing chorus of Danny Boy and a smoke on his pipe.
John Scanlon, who lives at Highfield Residential Home, in Brickhill celebrated his birthday on Tuesday with a gathering of friends and family.
The father of five was born in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne on the August 14 1912, four months after the sinking of the Titanic.
He married his wife Pat in 1936 and shortly after they moved to Bedford where he worked at Sterling Foundry, in London Road for 45 years.
Pat and John had five children three daughters and two sons. He now has eleven grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Sadly Pat died 10 years ago and John moved to Highfield Residential home four years ago.
He now spends his days enjoying the snooker, horse racing and football and still supports Newcastle United.
His greatest pleasures are spending time with his family and treating them and residents at the home to singalongs, especially his version of Danny Boy which is heard by all.
John also enjoys sitting and smoking his pipe, which he calls his best friend.
