A&E admissions up during icy spell

Icy conditions have led to 74 people being admitted to Bedford Hospital’s A&E department as a result of trips and falls.
This is a 72 per cent increase on the week earlier leading hospital chiefs to issue safety warnings for residents.
Stuart Lloyd, ED lead consultant and associate medical director in acute medicine, said: “As with every winter, our message is for people to take care and to do their best to stay safe.
“There are some simple steps that we can all take to reduce the chance of suffering a fall. Wearing well-fitted shoes that are in good condition and support the ankle is one example, and taking care when walking on slippery surfaces is another.”
He added: “The Met Office advises putting grit or cat litter on paths and driveways to lessen the risk of slipping, and adds that you should wait until the roads have been gritted if you are travelling by car.”
11 people were admitted on Thursday (January 17), 24 people on Friday, 20 people on Saturday, and 19 people on Sunday.
