A community orchard for Queens Park

Residents of Queens Park will soon never have to buy an apple again, thanks to a new community orchard.

On Saturday, March 2, councillors and other members of the community gathered to plant the trees which will form an orchard on The Slipe.

More than seventy people, including Dave Hodgson, the Mayor of Bedford, took part in the event and planted apple, pear, plum and cherry trees.

Councillor Mohammad Yasin, who has been instrumental in setting up the project, said: “I am very happy to be a part of this project. We had a very successful day, local residents showed a great interest in this project. In a couple of years time local residents will be able to pick free fruit from these trees.”

The group behind the project are now planning a programme of events including a midsummer picnic, history and nature walks and children’s activities.
