A business boost for young designer
MBTC-28-08-12- James Price. James Price has created a graphic desin job with the help from the Princes Trust. Yelden.
A young designer who overcame dyslexia and unemployment has won a grant from the Princes’ Trust to set up his own business.
James Price, 20, who lives in Yelden, went through a rigorous selection process before being selected for the start-up loan to by cutting edge equipment for his new design business Rekonyzd.
James, who used the year he spent unemployed to learn the skills necessary to start the firm, said: “It got to a point where I had applied for all the jobs that were about and half of them were through recruitment agencies, sometimes I felt that they didn’t even forward the applications on.
“I decided if I can’t find a job I would make a job for myself. Now I have the equipment I can offer more and be more creative with my work.”
He added: “Without the loan I wouldn’t have been able to buy any of the equipment that I’ve got. Being out of work for a year I had no money so without them I wouldn’t have been able to do this.”
James’ dyslexia was not diagnosed at school and he was told by teachers not to apply for sixth form college. But James defied the odds and scored a place at Sharnbrook to do his media BTEC for which he scored a triple distinction.
After school he got a job at a graphic design firm in Corby but found himself redundant last year, but James is good humoured about his struggle.
He said: “I chose the name Rekonyzd for my business because I genuinely can’t spell recognised. I knew it wasn’t spelt like that but it’s a bit of a joke at myself.”
