9,000 in Bedford will have new state pension age
CHANGES to the state pension will affect 9,000 people in Bedford who will now be eligeble to retire aged 66.
People who were born after April 5 1953 will now be eligible to claim the basic state pension later than before after an increace in life expectancy prompted the government move.
11 million people in the UK will live to be 100 which means that the State Pension had had to be changed age in order to keep it sustainable over the longer term.
The new timeline means that people may need to plan differently in order to prepare for their retirement.
Women’s state pension age is increasing so that it is the same as men’s. And State Pension age for women and men is rising to 66.
Since the default retirement age was abolished in 2011, there is no longer any fixed retirement age, so individuals can choose when to retire.
