30-year-old woman is refused sale of alcohol
b12-988 Lenore Campbell 30yrs was refused alcohol at Cardington Rd Tescoes in Bedford because she had her 17yr old friend with her.
A woman has claimed she was refused alcohol by a supermarket giant just because she was with somebody who was underage.
Lenore Campbell, 30, visited the Tesco store in Cardington Road with the intention of buying alcohol for a family event that evening.
But when she reached the checkout, she says she was refused the sale because she was with a friend. who was 17 years old.
Lenore, of Nicholls Road, Bedford said: “I feel quite angry, I was made to feel like I was doing something wrong. I wasn’t buying the alcohol for my friend, it was for me and she didn’t try to buy any alcohol so there was no evidence that I wanted to buy it for her.
“It’s ridiculous, I’m 30 years old, I and ID to prove my age, but they still wouldn’t serve me, just because I was with someone underage. That’s not the law, it is if you can prove you are over 18, then you can buy alcohol.”
Lenore says she also encountered a similar incident when she was refused cigarettes by Tesco, as she was with her 13-year-old daughter.
A spokesman for Tesco said: “We take our responsibilities towards the sale of alcohol very seriously and operate a strict Think 25 policy.
“Additionally, if we feel alcohol or any other age restricted product is being purchased by an adult for someone underage, then the sale will be refused at our staff’s discretion
