Is book shop display a Shade too racy?

Waterstone's in Bedford have created a 50 Shades of Grey window display.
Waterstone's in Bedford have created a 50 Shades of Grey window display.

A risque window display to promote the latest book in the racy 50 Shades of Grey series has been defended by the shop’s manager.

Staff at Bedford’s Waterstone’s have put the display, complete with mock up bed and handcuffs, together themselves.

It is designed to entice people inside to purchase Grey: Fifty Shades of Grey as Told by Christian, which went on sale at the Silver Street store last week.

Store manager Kay Duffy said a very similar display, which was created inhouse rather than being distributed by the book shop’s head office, was used at the town centre store when the original 50 Shades of Grey book was released.

She said: “We didn’t have any comments when we had that window last time.

“We have resurrected it for the new book and we haven’t had any adverse comment here.

“If someone did think it was inappropriate we would obviously do something about it.”

This time around the bedroom-themed window display will only be on show for a short period of time and is expected to be changed after the weekend.
