Bedford teacher Michael Cox of Bedford Academy was feted as a finalist in the Sky Sports Living for Sport Teacher of the Year presented by global sporting icons David Beckham and Jessica Ennis-Hill live on Sky Sports 1 on Tuesday evening.
Michael was selected as one of three finalists in recognition of the outstanding and inspirational contribution he made to the development of his students.
Soccer superstar Beckham said: “It was a privilege to be able to give Michael his award and celebrate his inspirational story on what really was an incredible day.
“He is a shining example of what Sky Sports Living for Sport is all about and demonstrates the power sport has in helping young people believe in themselves and in reaching their full potential.”
Michael said: “It was really good day. It was a bit strange to be on a TV programme – I had met David before when he came to the school, and he recognised me which was great. He was a really high calibre guy with no celebrity about him. We had a quick chat about how I was doing and he told me to keep up the good work.
“Sport is incredibly important. It teaches you how to win and lose and dust yourself down and start again. It teaches you life skills and instils character. But I didn’t celebrate, I just went home and planned the next lessons!”
