A new email has been launched so that deaf people can contact Bedford Hospital’s switchboard directly.

DeafHelp@bedfordhospital.nhs.uk is the first of its kind and is monitored around the clock.

The confidential service has been launched by Bedford Hospital in conjunction with Access Bedford and Healthwatch Bedford Borough.

In addition to receiving an email acknowledgement, the sender will also receive details of the action being taken or a request to clarify some of the information if necessary.

Users of the new service are being advised that, although the email address is monitored 24-hours a day, it should not be used for emergencies.

Deputy director of nursing Tracey Brigstock said: “Access can affect many people who have a disability and as a hospital we continue to do all that we can to make our facilitate accessible to everyone.

“We are very pleased that we have been able to work in partnership with Access Bedford and HealthWatch Bedford Borough to lead the way on improving access to our services for D/deaf people through the launch of this new service.”
