‘Make the NHS hear’ says campaign group hosting meeting in Bedford for patients and families

A group which aims to improve treatment and care in NHS hospitals is hosting two meetings for people who want to get involved.

The Bedford branch of the Cure The NHS campaign is inviting anyone who has experienced poor treatment at Bedford Hospital, or whose relatives have cause for complaint, to join them for advice and support.

The group was set up last year by Jan Hanson, who claims his mother and brother both received poor care at the hospital.

He will be joined at the meetings by human rights solicitor Emma Jones, who will speak about how beneficial she feels campaign groups are when it comes to getting change.

She said: “In my experience, if many people raise the same issue together, it carries greater weight. Two voices are louder together than two people speaking individually.”

Ms Jones will also give advice on how to complain effectively and how to go about legal proceedings.

Mr Hansen initially complained to the hospital in 2009 following the death of his mother Beryl, who he said was neglected and “went in the worst possible way”.

When his terminally-ill brother was admitted to the same ward in 2012, Mr Hanson claims, nothing had changed.

He set up the Bedford branch of Cure The NHS to press for improvements, and wants to hear from other people who have had similar experiences.

Two meetings are being held in the Shakespeare Hotel, Shakespeare Road, Bedford, on Thursday, May 15, from 2pm to 4pm, and 6pm to 8pm.

Nina Fraser, director of nursing and patient services at Bedford Hospital, said: “The experiences of patients and their relatives play a vital role in continuing to improve the services we provide.

“If anyone has not experienced the high quality care that they should expect from Bedford Hospital, or if they would like to let us know about a positive experience, then we welcome the opportunity to hear from them. They can contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 01234 795814.

“We also engage with patients, their families, and the local community in a number of other ways, including our patient council and local HealthWatch organisations. We will now be speaking to the local branch of Cure the NHS to see how we can work together so that the views of local people can help shape the way we positively improve our services.”
