Making the ceremonial cut with the spade was Gordon Beeden, vice chairman of the Bedford Hospitals Charity, which is funding the redevlopment.

Charity spokesman Brian Hanling said the project has been made possible thanks to all those who have donated to the Challenge Cancer appeal.

He said: “It began with the enthusiasm of charity chairman Jayne Beard. She was instrumental in starting the £750,000 Challenge Cancer Appeal in September 2014, and this 17-week programme will see the attainment of all the objectives of the appeal in just two years.”

He added the first £250,000 raised bought new equipment during 2015, and £500,000 will now be spent to increase the capacity and improve the layout of the Primrose Unit.

While the work is proceeding, all Primrose patients will attend a specially prepared facility within the hospital.
