Curious sounds, heard only through elaborate ear trumpets, came from beneath the feet of visitors to Bedford's Castle Mound.

The quirky theatrical performance sparked the imagination of young and old as the secret sounds were revealed to them by members of Gobbledgook Theatre.

Through the refashioned trumpets, euphoniums and other brass instruments, contemporary classical music was revealed “as if by magic”.

Artistic director Lorna Rees said: “We’ve had a really delightful reaction to this piece. It encourages people to listen to everything which is going on around them.

“It’s sonic, it’s quirky and it’s really playful.”

Ear Trumpet was performed on Saturday (June 11) as part of Bedford’s June Arts Jam, a new festival for children and young people.
