A group of loyal friends from Bedford are busy fundraising to help a man left paralysed after an accident.

The team are hoping to raise £10,000 to buy Darren Smith a specialist wheelchair to give him more independence after he was injured four years ago aged 41.

Samantha Day, her husband Gareth, and friends Lou Perkins, Enid Perkins and Jacqui Higgins, have already completed a 17-mile sponsored walk at Rutland Water in November, with their fundraising total expected to stand at just under £900.

Samantha said: “Darren is an awesome human being and he continues to take each day as it comes with an amazing outlook on life. He truly is inspirational and although communication is limited he chooses to be grateful, keeping a determined and positive outlook on life.

“We want to help make a huge difference to Darren’s life by purchasing the 2011 Perimobil C300, which will help him do the things we take for granted - the ability to go to his children’s school events or see friends.
