Firefighters feared squatters could be trapped inside a disused hospital building that had been deliberately set alight.

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to Bedford Hospital’s North Wing, off Kimbolton Road, on yesterday evening (Tuesday) just before 6pm.

They used a nine metre ladder to gain access to the building and tackled the fire wearing protective breathing apparatus using two fire hoses and a jet.

A spokesman for the fire service said: “As the building is sometimes occupied by squatters, firefighters searched the four stories and basement of the building for casualties but there were none.”

Firefighters found that a fire had been started next to one of the building’s windows.
