Firefighters freed a woman trapped in her car following a collision on the A507 between Ampthill and Clophill last night. (April 3)

The incident, near the Pineview Caravan Park, happened at around 6.30pm, when the car left the road, hit a willow tree and ended up in a ditch.

The tree crushed the passenger compartment which was fortunately empty, but left the female driver trapped by the dashboard. She suffered knee injuries but was otherwise unhurt.

Firefighters from Ampthill Community Fire Station were on the scene at 6.42pm to free the woman supported by the Kempston Special Rescue Unit.

Group Commander, John Foolkes, said: “Because the car ended up at a 45 degree angle in the ditch and the tree both penetrated the car and surrounded it this was a difficult and time consuming job. Fortunately the casualty was not seriously injured and after cutting off the roof of the car, removing the windscreen and stabilising and cutting back the tree we were able to remove her from the car. I’d like to praise the crews for their work in tackling this unusual job.”
