The history of Bedford’s Embankment has been laid out by a town historian on a new information board.

Residents and visitors can discover the fascinating history behind the town’s ‘Jewel in the Crown’ as they stroll along the river.

Among the nuggets of history are the tales of what happened to “Old Waterloo” in town, and the fate of a Russian Crimea gun which was once on show.

Bedford tour guide and historian David Fowler has delved deep into the Embankment’s past to highlight the rich and diverse heritage that has helped shape the picturesque area today.

His project was funded by Bedford Borough Council, and supported by the Bedfordshire Archives and Records Service. It is one of a number of history information boards David has been involved with around the town.

Bedford Mayor Dave Hodgson, said: “We are really pleased with the interpretation board and we hope it will be enjoyed for many years to come. It’s a great addition to the Embankment and provides a fascinating insight into the area’s rich history.”
