Put your Dukes up
YEARS of dedication were given royal recognition for four pupils from Wootton Upper School.
Hannah Carter, Fiona Bowser, Robert Edinburgh and Joel Mason, travelled to St James’ Palace to be presented with their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
And they met the Duke himself in the Entree Room - the same place where Prince William and Kate Middleton announced their engagement.
All four pupils had previously achieved both their Bronze and Silver awards, and were required to complete a 12-16 month programme for the Gold standardm involving service to the community, ranging from horse riding for the disabled and volunteering in local care homes to tennis coaching, and physical activity including competitive rugby and netball.
Each of them also had to learn new skills varying from learning to drive to playing the cello. And the group planned and undertook a five-day hiking expedition in the Yorkshire Dales, spanning over 100km of English countryside. In spite of less than desirable weather conditions, the group conquered the wind, rain and fatigue to become truly deserving Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award holders.
