A primary school in Bedford has been given a ‘good’ rating by ofsted inspectors who have praised support for children with English as a second language.

The report follows a two-day inspection at Shackleton Primary School, in Pearcey road, which took place in December.

The glowing report secures Bedford Borough’s position as the best place in the country to send your child to lower or primary school, as confirmed by Ofsted in their latest annual report.

Inspectors evaluated a wide-range of evidence and each category assessed was awarded a good grade, including achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils, and leadership and management.

Ofsted outlined how “leaders, including governors, have a clear vision for the school that puts it at the heart of the community.”

This, in turn, has “made teachers have high expectations and use their detailed knowledge of pupils to plan for a wide variety of needs in each class.”

Ofsted also commented on the “excellent support for children whom English is a second language and they are seen to make rapid progress in speaking English and other areas of learning.”

Ann Parish, head teacher, said: “We are delighted to have received recognition for the hard work and dedication shown by our children, staff, governors and families in our recent Ofsted inspection.

“We were particularly pleased with the acknowledgement of the work we do to promote children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, which was judged to be outstanding.

“The inspectors also praised the high expectations of all staff and their detailed knowledge of our children which ensures that the best learning opportunities are provided here at Shackleton Primary School.”

Councillor Henry Vann, portfolio holder for education at Bedford Borough Council, said: “This report is testament to the hard work of teachers, pupils, parents, school leaders, governors and the whole school community. Bedford Borough Council has invested heavily to ensure the creation of excellent teaching and learning space and we are seeing great results. Well done to all those that who have helped to secure this grade in every category.”
