No school for Luke after bursary confusion
MBTC- 05-03-13- Luke McHugh-Sangster. Bedford Luke McHugh-Sangster won a place at Bedford Prep School, but the wording of the letter led his mum Susan Sangster, who is a single mother on a low income, to believe that he had been offered a full scholarship. A mum who relocated to Bedford so her son could attend a private school has been left distraught after discovering the offer was not a bursary.
Single mum-of-two Susan Sangster moved her family to Bedford from London earlier this year, so that her son Luke could take up a place at Bedford Preparatory School.
But she claims that the acceptance letter was unclear and – although it stated that gifted sportsman Luke, 11, has not been awarded a bursary –the school knew that she could not afford the fees.
She said: “When I found out I broke down in tears straight away.
“I said this is wrong because I have told my son he has got a place, I’ve told his school he’s got the place and he’s told all his school friends about it.”
This week the Harpur Trust, which runs Bedford Preparatory School – a feeder school to Bedford School –said that there is nothing they can do to help with the fees as all bursaries have now been awarded.
A spokesman said: “Bedford School can confirm that Ms Sangster was informed by letter that her son Luke regrettably would not receive financial assistance for a place at the school through its sports and academic awards programme.”
