LEARNING foreign languages was the focus of a teaching conference in Bedford on Wednesday.

The Joined-Up Languages Conference took place at Lakeview School, in Wixams, Bedford.

The conference, which is for teachers of all ages of children. has a attracted a number of well-respected speakers including a keynote speech from Carmel O’Hagen, head of secondary education at the National Centre for Information on language Teaching (CILT).

Councillor David Sawyer, portfolio holder for education at Bedford Borough Council, said: “ Everyone recognises the value of speaking more than one language.

“Good teaching in this field can mean that a student’s world literally opens up to business and travel opportunities.

“The conference will allow professionals to share their teaching skills and allow for cross-phrase discussion.”

And the conference will also serve as a chance for Priory Lower School to celebrate its success in teaching German.

Following an outstanding Ofsted result earlier in the year the school has received the Primary Languages Award for German.

The prestigious award was been presented to commended language teacher Paula Wakeling.

She said: “Priory Lower has a very multi-cultural and multi-lingual intake and celebrates the diversity this brings.”

Along with Paula’s award the school also received a prize of learning resources which will help to further enhance their language teaching.

Also at the conference were speeches and workshops in memorable language learning using song and movement, progression in reading and writing and international education twinning.
