Ken ya go to Africa?
TWO teachers from Bedford Academy have returned from a cross-continental educational trip to Keyna.
Michael Cox and Ellie Branson travelled to Bishop Okiring Secondary School as part of an ongoing likn-up between the two schools.
And as well as learning about the differences between life and education in Keyna compared to Bedford, the duo also delivered lessons to African students about citizenship.
Bedford Academy students also sent letters to their counterparts in Kenya, discussing topics such as child poverty and child prostitution, to which they received responses.
Michael said: “We asked our students to take part in a photography project where they took home disposal cameras to get images of their local community.
“We took these photos out to Kenya with us and also asked some of the students there to do the same, so that we could bring some images back to demonstrate the difference in communities to our students. We wanted them to be able to experience the other schools setting through the eyes of the students there, rather than us as teachers, and visa versa for Bishop Okiring.”
He added: “One thing that we particularly noticed during our time spent in the classroom at Bishop Okiring was the sheer quality of teaching provision required because they didn’t have technology to rely on.
“It really struck home that a clear balance needs to be struck between the benefits of advanced technology in education and the need for traditional teaching methods to sit alongside that.”
