Going an extra mile for equality
Bedford Academy has been given a national award for going the extra mile for equality.
The EQualities award recognises schools who go the extra mile in demonstrating their commitment to equality and become equalities champions.
Bedford Academy is the first school in the county to receive the recognition.
Bedford Academy principal, Claire Smith said: “We strive to achieve an ‘extended family’ ethos at Bedford Academy which means looking out for each other and being supportive in every way possible.
“I am thrilled that our efforts have been recognised and rewarded in this way, which is of great credit to the students and staff who make up our extended family.”
Dr Chris Derrington, director of the EQualities Award, said: “The staff and governors at Bedford Academy conducted a rigorous audit of their policies and provision and produced an outstanding portfolio of compelling evidence of which they should be justifiably proud.
“The Academy actively promotes positive attitudes towards disability, ethnicity and gender equality which help to challenge stereotypes and raise aspirations for all students.”
