Girls on top at Schools Grand Prix
GEARED-UP girls from Bedford High School put their engineering skills to good use at the Schools Grand Prix earlier this month.
Managed by retired member of staff Philip Herrick the first team High Voltage won the award for the fastest car, atrophy for the most reliable car and won the race overall. The school’s other car, Sparks, finished 11th after suffering mechanical failure towards the end of the race.
Speaking after the race at Bedford Autodrome, head of the high school, Julie Eldridge, said: “We finished first in a field of 11 starting cars, recorded 100 laps and achieved the fastest time during Zayneb Farhoud’s drive.
“It was also fantastic to win the award for the most reliable car on the day and we are all indebted to the hard work and dedication of Philip Herrick as project leader. Our second car, Sparks, competed valiantly but, when the axle sheared, it really was the end of the road.
She added: “A clean sweep of top prizes really was a wonderful way to end Bedford High School’s involvement with the Schools’ Grand Prix but we look forward to Bedford Girls’ School carrying the flag for young female engineers and drivers now we have fully merged with the new school.”
In a further boost for women’s engineering Bedford Girls’ School came sixth in the race. Bedford Girls’ School also won the prize for the best corporate hospitality with a jubilee-themed best of British buffet.
