As nearly 800 proud students gathered in Harpur Square for their group photo, one graduate Lora Pllana got more than she expected from the day - her boyfriend Edison proposed.

Saying yes, the romantic pair were enveloped in Bedford’s biggest group hug with her fellow students.

Tuesday’s ceremony in the Corn Exchange was followed by a procession and a civic ceremony.

Along with celebrating all the graduates’ achievements, actor and musician Matt Berry was presented with an Honorary Doctorate for his contribution to the arts.

The critically-acclaimed singer and star of Toast of London and The IT Crowd, said his proud parents were sitting in the front row.

He said: “It was a big honour to receive the degree, and be invited to their ceremony.

“I know people put so much effort into their PhD - I have a degree in fine arts, so I know what it entails.”

Jazz musician Jacqui Dankworth also received an Honorary Doctorate.
