Dorries demands 'smeargate' apology from PM
Nadine Dorries MP has threatened to take legal action after being named in a proposed smear campaign.
The Mid Beds MP has received a hand-written letter of explanation from Prime Minister Gordon Brown after it emerged at the weekend that a Labour spin doctor had proposed spreading smears about her as part of an internet campaign against the Conservatives.
The idea had been touted of claiming Ms Dorries had a one-night stand in a hotel with a fellow MP. She said the claims were "100 per cent not true".
Ms Dorries, who is insisting on an apology from the Prime Minister, said: "I was shocked and angry because the claims are 100 per cent untrue.
"I work in a grubby world where we are used to exaggeration and spin, but this was a new moral low fabricating these things.
"Fortunately I have had a lot of support, but the whole affair has been almost Shakespearean. It is as though someone has said, 'let's make out that George Osborne's wife is going mad, and Nadine is having an affair'. That is puerile, misogynistic behaviour."
The identity of the man Ms Dorries was accused of having an affair with has not been released. She said the pair of them were looking at taking legal action.
Ms Dorries added: "There is no place for personal attacks in politics. We are just people trying to do a job. There are 646 MPs in parliament and the majority of them are honest and hard-working.
"Sometimes you get people who are overly partisan, but the majority of us have the utmost respect for each other.
"It is hard work that matters, not personal attacks."
Writing on her blog, she adds: "I want an apology from Gordon Brown. I want Damian McBride's desk cleared. I would also like to know how Gordon Brown would feel if Conservative campaign headquarters wrote such disgusting lies about his wife, Sarah Brown."
