A new discount card for unpaid family carers has been unveiled in Bedfordshire.

Carers in Bedfordshire has marked Carers Rights Day by launching the new card which is now available to help unpaid family carers across Central Bedfordshire save money.

More than 50 businesses, local and national, have signed up to the Discount Card scheme, such as Boots, Warner Leisure Hotels, Timpsons and Toni & Guy. The offers are across many retail sectors including food and drink, hair and beauty, household, legal, leisure and transport. There are also offers for Young Carers too, for example at the Birds of Prey Centre and Café Kidz in Biggleswade.

Business owner Lindsey Copperwheat of TC Kitchens, an active member of Ampthill Chamber of Trade and Commerce, was one of the first to sign up.

She said: “From personal experience, I know what a struggle it can be to look after someone at home when they are disabled or have a long-term condition. The card is a way for my business to do something practical to help and I would encourage other local businesses to join this discount scheme to reward unpaid family carers.”

Carers in Bedfordshire’s chief executive, Helen Satterthwaite, said: “We know that when you are looking after somebody, money can be tight and we are very excited to be able to offer this scheme out to Bedfordshire’s hard working carers.”

New users of the card have recently said: “I used my card to get all my sofas dry cleaned and it has saved me £10.” Another carer said that it had certainly raised awareness and added: “I used my card in Boots in Biggleswade, and the person who served me was very interested in how I was a carer. We had a lovely chat and I was really pleased that someone took an interest in me. Hopefully next time I go in I can update her!”

Carers can get their free discount card at the Central Bedfordshire Council Carers Forum on November 26, 10am – 2.30pm at Dunstable Fire Station, Brewers Hill Road, Dunstable, or from the Carers in Bedfordshire website. The website also lists all the discounts being offered.
