A man was the victim of a violent robbery near Bedford Rugby Club in the early hours of Tuesday.

He was walking along Goldington Road, Bedford, shortly before midnight when he was followed by three men who had earlier approached him for a cigarette.

The offenders, who were all of average build and had their faces covered, pushed the victim from behind and punched him, causing minor facial injuries.

The group demanded he hand over his wallet and phone, before making off with his wallet in the direction of the town centre.

Detective Constable Surinder Ram, investigating, said: “This nasty attack took place near the entrance to Bedford Rugby Club and it is possible other people were in the area who may have seen what happened.

“Robbery is not tolerated and we are committed to finding the people responsible for this offence, with the public’s help.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact DC Ram on 101, or call Crimestoppers, the independent charity, anonymously on 0800 555 111.
