Police are appealing for witnesses following a single vehicle road traffic collision on Sunday afternoon (March 15) after which the driver made off, leaving his seriously injured passenger behind.
It happened at around 1.24pm on the eastbound carriageway of the A421 in Kempston, near the junction with the A6 slip road, when a dark-coloured Vauxhall Vectra crashed into a barrier on the nearside and came to a halt in the middle lane.
As emergency services arrived the driver got out and ran off towards Kempston’s Interchange Retail Park. He is described as white, in his late 20s, 5ft 6ins tall, of slight build and bald. He was wearing dark clothing.
His rear seat passenger, a woman in her mid-twenties, was taken the Bedford Hospital south wing with a suspected broken arm and leg. It’s believed no-one else was in the car and no other vehicles were involved.
Sgt Ritchie Barker, investigating, said a number of motorists had to swerve to avoid the stranded vehicle and he is keen to speak to anyone who saw the driver or knows who he is. He is also keen to speak to anyone who saw the car being driven in an erratic way before the incident.
Two of the three lanes were closed for a full collision investigation.
Anyone with information can telephone police, in confidence, on 101, or Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111. The officer in the case is PC Andy
