Council cash for Roxton?

New grant set to be approved to help new pavillion

A cash application to finish off the Roxton village sports pavilion is set to be discussed by Borough Hall chiefs on Tuesday (February 9).

At a meeting of the rural affairs committee council bosses will decide whether to approve an extra grant of 21,403 to fit out the new pavilion with electricity and plumbing.

Councillor Tom Wootton, who represents Roxton, criticised the system, claiming that the committee had become "stingy".

He said: "A lot of the villagers have agreed to do parts of the work for nothing but the committee said that they didn't have enough quotes for electricity and plumbing.

"They have got more quotes now and the committee has told them to have another crack.

"The committee only has one rural councillor on it and I'm afraid they have become a bit stingy."

In June 2006 Roxton Parish Council received 25,000 to build the pavilion, which will be used as a community hub and sports facility.

The decision on whether to provide funding for this stage in the project was deferred on December 15 pending the submission of two more competitive quotes for the work required.

At that meeting representatives from the Roxton Parish Council gave a presentation in support of the work and answered questions from the committee.

The project is supported by 75 per cent of residents living in Roxton and will be maintained by the parish council using revenue from match fees and local fund-raising.

Roxton Parish Council has so far provided 7,500 worth of funding for the scheme.
