Councillor Colleen Atkins, who oversees adults’ services and community wellbeing, said: “Signing the declaration on tobacco control is a response to the enormous harm smoking causes to our society.

“We are committed to ensuring tobacco control is part of mainstream public health work. Not only does smoking cut short lives, it damages local communities and economies.”

Director of policy for action on smoking and health Hazel Cheeseman said: “Tackling tobacco can transform lives and communities, reduce inequalities and put cash back in the pockets of those who need it most.

“We’re delighted Bedford Borough Council has joined councils across England in signing the declaration and committing to reduce the harm caused by smoking.”
