Could the Tories save Bedford middle schools?
New legislation could change school shake-up
Parent power and high standards could save some Bedford middle schools, a Parliamentary hopeful has claimed.
Conservative Richard Fuller claims that Tory legislation could give parents the opportunity to save some high-achieving middle schools, such asLincroft Middle School in Oakley and Goldington Middle School in Bedford.
Mr Fuller, who will stand for the Bedford and Kempston seat at the next election, said: "A Conservative Government would have an impact on the issue of education in Bedford.
"There are big question marks over Building Schools for the Future (BSF) funding and it is likely that the schools changes will not have been completed by the time this legislation is passed.
"This will give educators choices and there will be more opportunities for local parents and teachers to make decisions.
"If you really want to chart a new course and you have the credibility to do it then the Conservative Government will help you."
Under plans proposed by the Tories schools thathave achieved an excellent Ofsted report would have the opportunity to become academies.
These could be founded by approved parents and teachers groups who would be able to set their own teaching agenda.
