A controversial plan to open a Costa Coffee in Ampthill has been approved by planners.

Despite local opposition, Central Bedfordshire Council this week approved the application by the chain coffee shop to open a branch where the old Barclays Bank used to be.

Following the news Costa told the T&C the new cafe would create eight to ten jobs and would be operated by a long-standing franchisee, who would “integrate themselves in the local community”.

And the news has been met with a mixed reaction on Twitter, with some people fearing in could affect local independent coffee shops.

Rachel Lewis said: “It’s good news for Ampthill, more visitors = more chance of them spending money in the town. Yes, I will be using it.”

But Caron Brooks tweeted: “No. What about the small independent coffee shops? It will destroy them.”

A spokesman for Costa said: “We appreciate that the opening of a branded store can be a highly emotive issue for some people. However, we honestly do not think that any of the traders in Ampthill should see Costa as a threat. Our offering is very different to the local independent coffee shops and bakeries and we believe people can use both.”
