The annual event, organised by the Road Victims Trust, saw the plucky participants being dropped in Brighton with just one pound per team.

They had to get back to Bedford without their mobile phones, any other money or credit cards, relying on the kindness of strangers.

And completing tasks en route, wearing fancy dress.

This year’s event was heroically won in record time by a team dressed as Brownies.

Calling themselves Flight of the Navigators, Rachel Glendenning, Nicky Baxter, Tasha Connelly, Kate Rowley, from Bedfordshire Police, crossed the line at 3.55pm.

They were closely followed by a team dressed as traffic cones called Never Mind the Bollards, 25 minutes later.

The event raised more than £5,000 for the charity, which supports those affected by road deaths. To take part in next year’s Great escape, email [email protected]
