Government minister Alistair Burt iskeeping his powder dry in the forthcoming poll to choose the next leader of the Conservative Party.

Mr Burt, who is currently a junior health minister, was first elected to Parliament in 1983, becoming MP for North East Bedfordshire in 2001.

This will be his seventh party leadership campaign as an MP, but he is still undeclared.

A member of his team said: “Heis waiting to see who comes out in the initial hustings and will make a decision on that basis.”

Alistair Burt is known to have been a prominent supporter of Ken Clarke, the former Chancellor and Home Secretary who stood for party leader in 1997, 2001 and 2005.
