A Bedford woman who was seen dropping a cigarette end has been ordered to pay £395.
Ancuta Visan of Victoria Road, Bedford, did not appear at Luton Magistrates on Monday 17th February. Magistrates heard that Miss Visan was seen dropping the butt on St Paul’s Square in July 2013 and was issued a Fixed Penalty Notice.
Miss Visan did not pay the Notice and the matter was therefore passed to the Magistrates Court.
She was fined £200, ordered to pay costs of £175 and a victim surcharge of £20.
The Magistrates praised Bedford Borough Council officers in their continued work to reduce littering within the borough.
Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “Littering is illegal, anti-social and costs taxpayers more than £1million to clear up every year.
“That is why we have a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of environmental crime and have issued more than 550 Fixed Penalty Notices for littering and other similar crimes since April last year.
“We will continue to take action against the minority of people who believe it is acceptable to drop litter in the borough.”
