The scheme uses a special solution to spray or paint designs and pictures on pavements, tiles and buildings.

It can barely be seen until it gets soaked by rain.

And the hope is that the hidden street art will encourage more people to visit the town centre on wet days when they would otherwise stay indoors. A trail of specially created street art images will lead visitors around many locations within the town centre.

The project was the brainchild of Karen Fryc, who is from Get Into Bedford PR company.

“Something like this has never been attempted in the UK before,” said Karen.

“I approached Bedford BID with the project last summer and they loved it and backed it,” she added.

She spent months preparing to launch with a bang in January, hoping to paint all the locations in one hit over three days.

But they needed three consecutive days of dry weather to do so. The problem has been that since Christmas we have not had three dry days to enable us to paint!” she said.

Now the street art team has decided to snatch dry spells while it can and decorate the locations one by one.

Last week the first surface was completed in Lime Street.

“I hope people enjoy it,” said Karen. “A number of art works are already in place and the rest will be appearing very soon. So next time it rains bring your brolly to Bedford, and see if you can find them all.” For more details follow Love Bedford on Twitter and Facebook.
