A colourful procession is set to walk through Bedford to kickstart the annual Festival Of Lights to celebrate Diwali this month.
The event is being held on Sunday, October 27 at 2pm with a procession of various different ethnic groups and Bollywood dancers.
A programme of culture, music and dance is then due to take place between 3pm and 9pm at Bedford Corn Exchange. There will also be food stalls from different nationalities available.
The Hindu festival is traditionally celebrated in homes by families, but more recently public events have been organised to celebrate.
The event is being held by the Bedford Indian Community, which started the community annual celebration two years ago.
Committee member Bipin Shah said: “Diwali is something that is usually celebrated by families in their own homes, but we wanted to do something to bring all the communities in Bedford together to celebrate.
“The first year we attracted about 1,000 people and last year there were more than 2,000 so it seems to be really growing. There is going to be something for everyone, dancing, music, stalls, displays.”
The procession will leave Tesco in Midland Road and finish in St Paul’s Square.
