Bedford votes to leave the EU

Bedford has voted to Leave the European Union, mirroring the picture across most of England.

The result for Bedford Borough was 44,569 for the Leave campaign, with the Remain vote at 41,497, with Bedford Borough Council reporting a 72.1 % turnout (86, 136).

In Central Beds the vote was 89, 134 for the Leave Campaign, with 69, 67 voting to Remain.

In Luton the Leave campaign was 47,773 against 36,708.

Overall the the high percentages of turnout compared to 23.7% across Bedfordshire for the recent police and crime commissioner elections.

The high turnout saw polling stations busy throughout the day on Thursday with people queuing outside the doors when they opened at 7am.

At Bromham one of the volunteers who helped said she they saw a massive turnout despite the gloomy weather which they may affect turnout.

The count for Bedford was carried out at the Bunyan Centre in Mile Road, Bedford.
