Nadine Dorries’ monthly column: How I am leading the war against the incinerator
CONTROVERSY: Nadine Dorries
THERE is little enough at the best of times for the people of Bedfordshire to find endearing about Chris Huhne, the Liberal Democrat MP, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, twice failed leadership candidate, inept leaker of cabinet papers, and menace to road users.
While his tenure in high office may soon be coming to a timely end, Chris Huhne’s departing gift and legacy could be a toxic ash-spewing incinerator at Rookery Pit near Stewartby.
This is because the beleaguered Chris Huhne is trying to remove the rights of Bedfordshire residents and parish councils to object to the Covanta proposal.
Anyone whose environment would be affected by this has a right to object to Parliament, and to have their concerns heard by a committee and voted upon. I have been encouraging people to object and residents have been copying me in as they have done so.
Chris Huhne believes that by narrowing the scope of any objections he will be able to ignore most of the legitimate complaints and force through the incinerator against the wishes of local residents. His claims to have been a successful minister are clearly thought more useful to the Lib Dems in future elections than winning the support of Mid Beds voters.
He is trying to pull the lowest of tricks and, even worse, he is cowardly trying to sneak it through behind the coat-tails of his officials.
This is a cynical ploy in the back rooms that attempts to remove the democratic rights of my constituents. If he thought he was getting away with this he can think again.
Despite the best efforts of the slippery Mr Huhne, I am continuing to lead the trench warfare against the Covanta proposal in Parliament. The unaccountable Infrastructure Planning Commission was designed to take power away from local people in favour of faceless bureaucrats.
The special procedure order allows us to fight back, so send in your objection using the petitioning pack. Let’s put this polluting, inefficient wasteful and undemocratic incinerator proposal to an end, once and for all.
