James Jamieson’s monthly column: Planning ahead for the unexpected

ONE thing I’ve learnt in life is to expect the unexpected. The almost persistent rainfall ever since the hosepipe ban was announced is proof that life is full of surprises.

That’s why I’m a real believer in having a plan. I like to map out what I want to achieve and to be clear about how I’m going to do it.

At this week’s council’s executive we discussed our plan for Central Bedfordshire for the next four years.

The plan is called “Delivering Your Priorities” because it has been shaped by residents’ feedback on what matters to you and the things you most want to see improved so that Central Beds continues to be a great place to live and work.

So, how will we do this?

Firstly, by providing great services. We’ve protected our frontline services despite a tough budget settlement. Instead of closing libraries we are investing in a modernisation programme to make them more cost-effective. We’re also starting to shape our future leisure provision, while extending our current leisure contracts in Flitwick.

We’re also determined to give you great value. The extra money we need to invest in sorting out the things that need improving, like the state of our roads, will come from us running things more efficiently rather than putting up council tax – increased bills is the last thing households need right now.

We want our residents to have great prospects. Knowing that people are increasingly concerned about unemployment we have an important role to play, by working with developers to stimulate investment and supporting local business and schools so that we have the right skills for the future.

We’re lucky to live in a great area which benefits from a mixture of historic market towns, idyllic villages and beautiful countryside. Together with local people, our partners in town and parish councils and the police, we plan to help our communities flourish.
