COLD SNAP - Cat litter is no substitute for grit
Some householders try to use pet product to tackle the ice
Resourceful householders who use cat litter in an attempt to defrost their paths are only making the problem worse.
Staff at the Pets at Home store, at the Interchange Retail Park in Kempston, have seen a marked rise in the amount of cat litter
sold.
Company bosses are warning shoppers not to spread the products on the snowy ground because it will make conditions even more treacherous.
Kevin Hoye, store manager at Pets at Home in Bedford, said: "With many areas in the country currently running low on grit we have seen more people buying cat litter as an alternative.
"However, we are advising people against this as it can in fact make the ground more dangerous under foot."
If cat litter is scattered in the snow the clay granules will soften, creating a slippery surface.
Using paper and corn-based litter will not melt the ice or improve
traction.
While wood and silica-based products may improve conditions at first it will soon break down under foot and cause more slippy conditions.
