Bedford College has hosted a culinary competition for young cooks aged 12 to 16.
The four talented hopefuls took up the challenge to showcase their fantastic cooking skills and battled it out to win the local final in the FutureChef contest, held on Monday, January 12.
Winner was Chelsea Holmes who impressed the judges with her winning menu of chicken served with sweet potato followed by her floating island dessert.
Runner up was awarded to Adriana Di Bernardo from Henlow C of E Academy with her Chicken Curry followed by Sweet Samosas.
They were joined in the Kitchen by 3 Industry Judges, including Adam Potten, Head Chef at Bedford Swan Hotel, Daniel Bustea, Executive Chef at Marriott, Peterborough and Frank Skinner from Babcock International.
Head Judge Adam Potten said “It has been great to see these girls cook with such passion and their dishes were all delicious.”
Springboard’s FutureChef is a nationwide culinary initiative which helps young people aged
12-16 cook their way through a series of challenges, providing invaluable lessons and insight into the culinary industry.
Winner Chelsea said: “I’ve really enjoyed the morning and it’s been great to see what the other competitors cooked too.” Chelsea will be mentored by Frank Skinner ready for the Regional Final at Bedford College on Monday, February 2.
Springboard’s FutureChef, now in its 15th year, was developed as the result of research findings into young people’s perception of the industry. The research revealed that young people admire higher profile and celebrity chefs, yet, surprisingly few generally consider a career as a chef! To address this, Springboard’s FutureChef local finals are judged by industry chefs with the winner paired up with a local industry chef mentor, to work on their dishes for the Regional Final. A range of employers are involved in the initiative and dedicated to inspiring young talent into the industry.
The 2015 initiative will culminate on March 23, with the National Final taking place at Westminster Kingsway College in London.
