A charity which supports projects to help children in the Philippines is recruiting new volunteers to staff its shop.

The Mercy In Action shop, in Castle Road, Bedford, is hoping people will come forward to help out during the week but particularly at weekends.

Manager Lynn Taylor said volunteering is a great opportunity for people not only to do something worthwhile and social, but to bolster their CV and help get into paid work.

She said: “The charity was set up in 1995 by a couple who went to the Philippines on holiday and saw the poverty and noted there is no social services to help vulnerable children and families.

“They started by setting up a street service to offer help to families and children, and that has grown into residential homes to care for children.”

The charity shop is expanding its opening times to increase its fundraising for a new home which rescues boys from the street who are at risk from sexual abuse, and are trafficked from other parts of the country.

Lynn said: “These boys have no family, no one to look after them. After Typhoon Haiyan, there is even more need as children have been left without families.”
