A well-known Bedford pub is celebrating after beating hundreds of other entrants to win a prestigious award.

Landlord and landlady Roland and Kay Keech, who run The Castle, on Newnham Street, have been named joint winners of Best Newcomer 2014 for the East Anglia and East Midlands region in the Great British Pub Awards 2014.

Roland and Kay then went head-to-head against the six other regional winners battling for the national title, eventually coming runners-up in the Best Newcomer category.

Kay said: “We are ecstatic to win such an award and we feel this is recognition of all of the hard work we have put in over the past year, with credit also to our staff and customers who have also been crucial to the success of the pub.

“One of the secrets is we always try to listen to what our regulars want. They are really proud of us and gave us a standing ovation when they heard. We are the only ‘village’ pub in the town centre, and we are attracting lots more women too - which our male customers aren’t too unhappy about!

“The brewery are amazed at what we’ve achieved. We are their flagship pub at the moment serving seven cask ales and over 20 unique fine wines.” Visit www.castlebedford.co.uk
