Cash plans in motion for building schools
BSF funding for Bedford schools draws near
Governemnt cash to finance a major shake-up of Bedford's schools system has come a step closer.
Bedford Borough Council is now officially part of the Government's Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.
The council was accepted into the scheme after provisional plans to move schools from a three-tier to a two-tier system were approved.
This means that it could receive 300million to design and build new schools.
The money is considered vital in the plans to abolish middle schools and change from a three-tier to a two-tier education system.
Councillor David Sawyer, portfolio holder for education at Borough Hall, said: "After many years of talking about the opportunities BSF could bring to Bedford Borough we are delighted to have passed this landmark stage in the process.
"We believe the BSF project will help deliver improved standards across the borough and transform teaching and learning in all of our secondary schools so that our young people will receive a first class education."
At a meeting last Wednesday (January 27) Borough Hall bosses met with representatives of Partnerships for Schools, which is the Government body responsible for BSF.
The council was given the green light by the organisation to move forward with the project.
