Calum Davenport still in a stable condition, says wife
West Ham star still in hospital
A Premiership footballer is still in a stable condition after being stabbed in Kempston, although his wife has admitted that she doesn't want to be "too optimistic."
Calum Davenport, 26, is being treated at Bedford Hospital after suffering stab wounds to the legs in an attack at his mother's home last month.
His wife Zoey said: "He is getting better but we don't want to be too optimistic as a lot is still going on."
It is believed that Mr Davenport's playing career could be at stake after the knife attack left him needing emergency surgery.
A spokesman for Bedford Hospital said: "Mr Davenport is in a stable condition."
Mr Davenport was born in Bedford, and has represented England at U17, U19 and U21 levels.
His previous clubs include Tottenham Hotspur and Coventry City, and he has also had loan spells at Southampton, Norwich City, Watford and Sunderland.
Worrell Whitehurst, 25, has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent to the West Ham United defender.
He is also accused of causing actual bodily harm to the footballer's mother Kim Stupple, and of driving while disqualified.
Mr Whitehurst will appear at Luton Crown Court on November 16.
