A Bedford councillor is standing up for bus users and drivers who need to use public conveniences in the town after working hours.
Councillor Roger Rigby has asked the borough council to keep the toilets located by Bedford Bus Station and Allhallows car park open beyond its current closing time.
At last week’s Environment Committee meeting, Mr Rigby questioned why the loos close at 5.45pm when the car park remains open until 8pm, and buses arrive later into the night.
He said: “‘The Council has spent £170k on the refurbished facility at Allhallows which closes as early as 5.45pm.
“The nearby private alternatives are not signposted, do not have baby changing facilities and only open a few minutes longer than the Council facility.”
He added: “Bus Station and car park users’ need to spend a penny is not governed by Council working hours. There is a strong case for the facility to remain open until 8pm. I hope that common sense overcomes budget cuts.”
A Bedford Borough Council spokesman said: “Bedford Borough Council is currently making arrangements for the toilets at Allhallows to remain open until 6.30pm as experience at other public toilets demonstrates that later opening results in the toilets being used for drug abuse and other anti-social behaviour which can subsequently leave the toilets completely out of use for all residents while repairs take place.”
