Building work on the long-awaited new Flitwick Leisure Centre has begun.
Bedfordshire company SDC began construction on Tuesday, November 18 on the playing pitches next door to the present centre, putting up hoardings and making the site safe for works that are expected to go on throughout 2015.
The new centre is due to be ready early in 2016.
The current centre will stay open during the complete building programme, and visitors can continue to use the car park as normal as all construction traffic will be using a separate entrance off Steppingley Road.
The building site will operate from 8am to6pm Monday to Fridays, 8:30am to 1pm on Saturdays and be closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays.
Councillor Brian Spurr, Executive Member for Community Services at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “It is fantastic that work is about to begin on this exciting new project.
“People have been talking about a new leisure centre in Flitwick for years so the start of building works marks another important step towards making that a reality.
“We hope that by early 2016 we’ll be able to welcome our first visitors, but until then the existing leisure centre will remain fully open.
“This is a major part of our leisure strategy for all of Central Bedfordshire
