VIDEO: Peep behind curtain with pop-up theatre

An empty shop is bringing some much-needed drama to the high street as actors use it as a pop-up theatre.

Novus Theatre are currently rehearsing a new play inside and hope the large windows will encourage people to watch their progress.

Artistic director Sam Turton said: “Having a high street location, and keeping the doors, open is very important.

“We have Arts Council funding as we are reactivating an empty space and the piece is on show at all times.”

The play, The Reverse Is Also True, will be performed on Friday, August 8 at 7.30pm, with a pay-what-you-want entrance fee. It will be followed by an audience Q&A session.

Sam said: “The feedback will help develop the play further, which we hope to perform in Edinburgh next year.”

He added: “It was written by Mark Illis and Stephen May, who is originally from Bedford and was keen to see it being performed in his home town.”

The company will be using the shop throughout August and has a diverse programme planned, including two other plays and the launch of its Christmas children’s show, Fantastic Mr Fox.

The pop-up theatre takes place in 47 High Street. It is a collaboration with BedPop, which ran the pop-up shop in the former Pizza Hut building, and property surveyors Stimpsons Eves.
